Künstler Samuel Bell Waugh malte diese ungewöhnlich lebendige, lebendige Ölskizze von Präsident Grant aus dem Leben 1869, möglicherweise vor Grants Einweihung als Präsident, weil er seine militärische Uniform trägt. Arthur Edwin Bye beobachtete, "Waugh hat Grant zu seinem besten interpretiert, in warmen, reichen, gut gemischten Tönen, mit ernsthaftem Ausdruck.
