Samuel Cooper gilt als Premiere Miniaturist des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts. Cooper lernte das Handwerk von seinem Onkel John Hoskins. Während der Zeit der englischen parlamentarischen Herrschaft, die als Interregnum bekannt ist, wurde Cooper von Oliver Cromwell beschäftigt, der als Lord Protector des Commonwealth von England, Schottland und Irland von 1653 bis 1658 diente. Diese Miniatur zeigt Cromwells jüngste Tochter, Frances, im Alter von 16 Jahren. Cooper wurde der Hofmaler an König Karl II., als die englische Monarchie 1660 restauriert wurde, zwei Jahre nach Cromwells Tod. Nach einem Zeittagebuch saß der neue König sofort für Cooper, um „eine Krönung des Gesichts und des Kopfes des Königs zu machen, die Stempel zu machen“ für neu ausgegebene Münzen.
