Das bild wurde in auftrag gegeben 1489 bei der kirche des florentiner klosters cestello, die heute als santa maria maddalena bekannt ist de'Pazzi . unter dem gemälde auf dem originalrahmen befinden sich lateinische wörter aus st. . Luke's Evangelium : " der heilige geist wird über dich kommen , und die macht des höchsten wird dich überschatten . "
