Sebastiano Ricci, che si era già misurato con analoghe tematiche in alcuni dipinti precedenti, quali il Ratto di Briseide e il Ratto di Proserpina, in questa tela mette in scena Elena di Troia, mitologica figlia di Leda e Giove, sorella dei Dioscuri nota per la sua L’iconografia qui adottata è fedele al racconto: Paride string fra le braccia la recalcitrante Elena per condurla sulla barca ormeggiata in un approdo naturale, roccioso, mentre i suoi compagni gli guardano le spalle e i marinai trattengono la barca puntando i remi sul fondo o aggrappandosi a un sostegno, e le Nereidi fanno da cornice alla scena ruhigando le acque del mare per visaire la fuga.
