Shepard Alonzo Mount schuf dieses Porträt seiner Frau Elizabeth Hempstead Elliott Mount nach ihrer Heirat. Er war bereits ein bekannter Künstler, der als Lehrling für einen Wagenbauer begann. Später studierte er Malerei und eröffnete schließlich sein eigenes Portraitstudio in New York City mit seinem Bruder William Sidney Mount. Nachdem er Elizabeth geheiratet hatte, malte er Landschaften, Stillleben und Porträts.
