In der griechischen Mythologie war die Nymphe Hesperia eine der Hesperides, deren Aufgabe es war, den Garten der Götter und mit Hilfe eines Drachenwächters einen Baum zu suchen, der goldene Äpfel produzierte. Diese Aquarell ist eine kleine Nachbearbeitung einer Ölgemälde, die Frank Dicksee 1887 an der Royal Academy ausstellte. Der Künstler, der von Lord Leighton und Sir John Everett Millais gelehrt wurde, erreichte einen erheblichen offiziellen Erfolg und war am besten für seine romantischen historischen Bilder bekannt, die die figurative Tradition der Pre-Raphaeliten gut in die Edwardian-Ära fortsetzten.
