Das Produkt von fünf Jahren Arbeit, das ist Reynolds größtes Gruppenporträt. Mit sorgfältig kalibrierten sozialen Hierarchien und emotionalen Bindungen arrangierte Reynolds die drei Männer in einer fiktiven Landschaft. Reynolds hätte seine Komposition auf einzelnen Sitzen im Studio basieren und anschließend die Figuren mit solchen Requisiten der aristokratischen Freizeit wie dem Grauhund, Weinglas und Silbereher arrangieren.
