Alma-Tadema wurde 1893 als Mitglied der akademischen Klasse der Maler nominiert und später als Zeichen seiner Dankbarkeit an die Akademie gespendet. Hier porträtiert er sich in einem 1907 gemalten Selbstporträt und präsentierte das folgende Jahr an der jährlichen Show der Royal Academy in London zusammen mit der gefeierten The Golden Hour (Privatsammlung). 1912 machte der Künstler, bevor er nach Rom schickte, leichte Veränderungen an der Selbstporträtin, einschließlich der Hinzufügung eines Strohhuts.[M.
