Dieses Porträt stammt aus der späten Zeit des Künstlers und blickt zurück auf die englische Portraittradition des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts, als England ein führendes Zentrum für das Genre war. Die Verwendung eines Landschaftshintergrundes war charakteristisch für die englische Schule. Gleichzeitig fällt das Porträt auch in die römische Tradition in der eleganten Lagerung der Sitter und in seinem Ausdruck, auf einmal haughty und Melancholie, während die Kleidung, Pose und lange untidy Haare sind alle typisch für den 19. Jahrhundert Dandy.
