Dieses Gemälde basiert auf einem Gedicht von Lord Tennyson. Es erzählt die Geschichte von Elaine, einem unschuldigen Landmädchen, das sich in Sir Lancelot verliebt. Er verlässt sie zugunsten von Königin Guinevere und sie stirbt von unentgeltlicher Liebe. Andersons Bild zeigt einen Diener, der Elaines Körper in den Palast des Königs Arthurs in Camelot stellt. Anderson wurde in Paris geboren und studierte dort unter dem russischen Künstler Baron Charles de Steuben. Ihre Kunstausbildung wurde kurz geschnitten, als ihre Familie 1848 nach Amerika zog. Von da an war sie selbst erwischt. 1871 hielt Liverpool seine erste Herbstausstellung. (
