Eines der Meisterwerke der buddhistischen Gemäldesammlung von Met ist diese Handschrift die früheste bekannte bemalte Version des fünfundzwanzigsten Kapitels des Lotus Sutra, das als „Universal Gateway of the Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World’s Sounds“ bekannt ist. Der Text des Sutra ist mit vierunddreißig bunten Bildern, die die barmherzigen Handlungen des Bodhisattva Kannon (Sanskrit: Avalokiteshvara) feiern, durchsetzt. Nach der Inschrift wurde diese Arbeit nach einem chinesischen Druckbuch von 1208 modelliert, das wiederum auf einer früheren lackierten Handschlaufe basierte. Der anonyme Künstler verwandelt das chinesische Original durch die Aufnahme von indigenen Yamato-e (traditionellen japanischen Malerei Stil) Elemente, vor allem in die Landschaften.
