Susan Macdowell, ein ehemaliger Student von Thomas Eakins an der Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, heiratete ihn 1884. Vor allem ein Porträtist, sie oft Familienmitglieder in Inneneinstellungen dargestellt. Ihr Modell hier könnte ihre Schwester Elizabeth gewesen sein, deren zukünftiger Ehemann 1900 als "The Thinker" erscheinen würde (17.172). Der auf dem Tisch liegende Fan spiegelt Susan Eakins Interesse an japanischer Kunst wider, die auch durch das Buch der Drucke signalisiert wird, die sie im Porträt ihres Mannes (23.139) hält. Nach ihrer Ehe gab Susan Eakins die Malerei auf, sich zu widmen, um ihren Mann zu unterstützen und später seinen Ruf zu etablieren.
