Vorbereitende Skizze in schwarzer Tinte und rotem Pigment zeigt Äste eines roten Pflaumenblütenbaums. Katei entwickelte Freundschaften mit einigen der chinesischen Männer, die bei der Botschaft in Tokio dienten. Im Jahre 1879 begab Shen Meishi den poetischen Namen der „Red Plum Embankment Hall“ auf Kateis neu errichtetem Wohnsitz. In der Ostasiatischen Kunst bedeutet Pflaumenblüte das Ende des Winters und das Kommen des Frühlings.
