Im Jahre 1844 besuchte Rousseau die Landesregion Südwestfrankreich, deren flaches Gelände die hier abgebildete Landschaft inspirierte. Die Landschaft erinnert an die offenen Ebenen und breiten Himmel, die er schon lange in der holländischen Landschaft des 17. Jahrhunderts bewundert hatte. Der Bootsmann und der Weg, der zurück zur Farm unter den Bäumen führt, zeigen, dass dies ein rustikaler Ort ist, wenn nicht ganz wild.
