Der MADELEINE, im Besitz von Commodore John S. Dickerson vom Brooklyn Yacht Club und entworfen von Jacob Voorhis, hatte eine illustre Geschichte. Sie wurde 1868 von David Kirby in Rye, New York als Centerboard Sloop gebaut. Im Jahre 1870 wurde MADELEINE teilweise wieder aufgebaut und zu einem Schioner umgebaut, später 1876 Mitglied der Flotte von New York Yacht Club. In diesem Jahr verteidigte sie den America's Cup gegen kanadischen Herausfordererer COUNTESS OF DUFFERIN. Swiftest in der New York Yacht Club Flotte, MADELEINE leicht gewann den Cup.
