Eakins hatte wahrscheinlich seinen ersten Zeichnungsunterricht von seinem Vater, einem professionellen Kalligraphen und Pädagogen von Penmanship an der Friends Central School in Philadelphia. Hier wird Benjamin Eakins (1818–1899) in einem altmodischen „Kupferplate“-Skript gezeigt. Während die ernsthafte und liebevolle Darstellung eines alternden Handwerkers mit Rembrandtesque-Eloquenz und Nostalgie gesättigt ist, zeigt Eakins Abgrenzung des Kopfes und der Hände seines Vaters seine Fähigkeiten der Beobachtung und Beschreibung. Benjamin Eakins weise Investitionen gab seinem Sohn lebenslange Finanzsicherheit.
