Frances Duncombe wurde 1757 geboren, die einzige Tochter von Anthony Duncombe und Frances Bathurst. Gainsboroughs Porträt von ihr zeigt die Bewunderung des Künstlers für Van Dyck, nicht nur in seinen eleganten Proportionen, anmutiger Pose und Arcadianer Einstellung, sondern auch im Kostüm, das an Moden des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts erinnert. Es wurde wahrscheinlich gemalt, während das Thema mit der Familie des Earl of Radnor lebte, in die ihre Stiefmutter geheiratet hatte; der Earl beauftragte von Gainsborough eine Reihe von Porträts im großen Stil, um seine Sammlung von alten Meistern zu ergänzen. Im Jahre 1778 heiratete Frankreich John Bowater von Woolwich, der verschiedene Reverse erlitt und ins Gefängnis der Schuldner ging, trotz des beträchtlichen Vermögens, das sie ihm mitbrachte.
