Hinckley malte Landschaften vor allem als Hintergrund zu seinen Porträts von wilden und heimischen Tieren. Das Skizzenbuch einschließlich dieser Landschaft scheint während einer Tour, die Hinckley wahrscheinlich in der Nähe der Delaware Wasser-Gap begann und sich nach Norden in die Catskill Mountains und Adirondacks von New York Sate erweitert. Wenige der Zeichnungen in diesem Buch können jedoch nach 1864 mit Hinckleys bekannten Gemälden verbunden werden, und die meisten von ihnen stellen nicht nur ausgewählte Motive dar, sondern diskrete Kompositionen, die oft den Charakter von gravierten Vignetten annehmen, wie diese schöne Zeichnung von Kaaterskill Clove, einem Lieblingsthema der Hudson River School of Landscape Malers.
