Geboren in Ohio, Whittredge begann seine Karriere als Zeichen und Portrait Maler in Cincinnati, wo er die Aufmerksamkeit der lokalen Mäzen, deren Unterstützung ihn ins Ausland reisen ermöglichte. Nach einem Jahrzehnt Studium in Europa kehrte er 1859 in die Vereinigten Staaten zurück, um in New York City Landschaftsmalerei zu verfolgen. Wie ein Blick im Hudson-Tal zeigt dieses Werk den Einfluss des Künstlers Asher B. Durand, dessen Waldinnen (15.30.59 und 95.13.1) Whittredges vertikale Komposition inspirierten. Im Gegensatz zu Durand, Whittredge nahm dramatische Lichteffekte, saftige schattige Foreground Bäume mit einem hell beleuchteten mittleren Boden, um die ausdrucksvollen Qualitäten der Natur zu betonen.
