Thorolf Holmboe wurde in Vefsn in Nordnorwegen geboren und zog mit seiner Familie weiter nach Tromsø im Alter von 10 Jahren. Sein Vater leitete eine Kunstgalerie und gründete die Tromsø Art Society. Tromsø war (und ist immer noch) das Portal zur Arktis und war ein Hauptzentrum der arktischen Jagd. Die meisten Seeschiffe Norwegens wurden in Tromsø gegründet. Er war Student der norwegischen Maler-Legende Hans Gude in Berlin. Später lebte und arbeitete er in Paris und Oslo.
