Ein Segelschiff im Packeis. Die Erforschung von Schiffen würde oft im Eis stecken bleiben und bis zum Frühling warten mussten, um wieder zu segeln. Manchmal war dies sogar das Ziel, so dass das Schiff als Basis für Expeditionen auf dem Eis und auf nahe gelegene Inseln funktionieren konnte. Thorolf Holmboe wurde in Vefsn in Nordnorwegen geboren und zog mit seiner Familie weiter nach Tromsø im Alter von 10 Jahren. Sein Vater leitete eine Kunstgalerie und gründete Tromsø Art Society. Er war Student der norwegischen Maler-Legende Hans Gude in Berlin. Später lebte und arbeitete er in Paris und Oslo. Neben der Malerei, machte er Designs für Keramik, Plakate und Buchbinder Kunst nouveau Stil.
