Titian wurde 1516 offizieller Maler von Venedig. Für den Sala del Maggior Consiglio im Palazzo Ducale malte er ein Serienporträt aller Hunde - also von Doge Trevisani. Diese Porträts wurden 1577 durch Feuer zerstört. Titian hat in der Regel eine oder mehrere Versionen der offiziellen Portraits ausgeführt. Dieses Gemälde im Budapester Museum wird als eine Version von Trevisanis offiziellem Porträt von Titian selbst angenommen.
