papst nikolaus iv. beauftragte die mosaikdekoration der apsis von santa maria maggiore , ersetzen der fifth-century mosaik, aber ohne das ursprüngliche thema vollständig zu ändern und die büste des erretters beizubehalten , glaubte, auf wundersame weise zur zeit der erschienen zu sein basilica's weihe . die aufgabe wurde jacopo torriti übertragen , wer verließ die lateran werkstatt herum 1291 um die arbeit in santa maria maggiore zu unterstützen .
