"Der frühe italienische Hochaltar von Ugolino di Nerio für Santa Croce, die große Franziskanerkirche von Florenz, ist gut dokumentiert. Mit mindestens fünfunddreißig Abschnitten wurde dieser massive Altar bemalt und aufgerichtet um 1325-30. Diese Panels erinnern an Duccios Sinn für Stil und Organisation, da Ugolino noch mit byzantinischer Linie und Farbe arbeitete. Der Altar wurde kurz nach 1566 demontiert und in das Kirchdom verlegt. In den 1830er Jahren war der größte Teil seiner Tafel verkauft worden. Jetzt sind die überlebenden Paneele unter Museen und privaten Sammlungen verstreut. Die Tafeln repräsentieren den Hl. Johannes der Täufer und über ihm St. Matthias und Elisabeth von Ungarn (links, ); St. Paul und über ihm St. Matthäus und James the Less (Zentrum); St. Peter und über ihm St. Jakobus der Großer und Philip."
