Francesco Venier (1490-1556) wurde am 11. Juni 1554 zum Dogen gewählt. Er regierte knapp zwei Jahre, bis zum 2. Juni 1556. Dieses Porträt ist ein ausgezeichnetes Beispiel für die Art, wie Titian Farbe in seiner späten Periode verwendet. Das Bild zerbricht nicht in unzählige Farben. Nur im Kleidungsstück gibt es ein feines Spiel von goldenen Farbtönen, das die Delikatesse des frail Doge unterstreicht. Bisher gab es keine Erklärung für das Feuer in der Lagune, die durch das Fenster sichtbar ist. In Bezug auf die Farbe bietet das Feuer einen wichtigen Kontrast zum blauen Himmel.
