Murasaki Shikibu erscheint poised, um zu beginnen, ihre Geschichte zu schreiben, as if in mid-thought. Ihr Kopf kippt von ihrem Schreibtisch weg, während ihr tranceähnlicher Stern leicht nach oben gerichtet ist, in Richtung der Kalligraphieblätter im oberen Teil des Gemäldes. Die Inschriften listen die vier Stadien der Tendai buddhistischen Kontemplation auf, die Murasaki gemeistert haben soll, zusammen mit zwei ihrer waka (dreißig-ein-syllable Gedichte), die mit der Unvollkommenheit des Lebens sprechen (mujōkan).
