Bis 1635 wurde Peter Stuyvesant, ein gebürtiges Westfriesland, Niederlande, von der niederländischen Westindien Co. eingesetzt und nach Brasilien geschickt. 1643 wurde er Gouverneur von Curaçao und anderen niederländischen Inseln der Westindien; während einer Expedition gegen die Portugiesen auf St. Martin 1644 wurde sein rechtes Bein verletzt, das Amputation erforderte. 1646 wurde er zum Generaldirektor von New Netherland ernannt; er diente in diesem Büro, bis die Kolonie 1664 unter britische Herrschaft kam.
