Diese still-life gehört zu van Gogh's frühe bemühungen in paris, die palette seiner gemälde aufzuhellen . die leinwände, die er in den niederlanden fertiggestellt hatte, waren zu dunkel, um als moderne kunstwerke akzeptiert zu werden . Er beschloss, die blume zu verfolgen still-life als mittel, um an seiner farbe zu arbeiten . Das geschenk still-life wird in relativ gedämpften farben ausgeführt , zeigt aber schon van Gogh's anwendung von rotem und grünem farbkontrast .
