Das Portrait von Mademoiselle Claus war eine frühe Version von Manets berühmtere Arbeit Der Balkon, wo Mademoiselle Claus mit Berthe Morisot und Antoine Guillemet abgebildet wird. Die unvollendete, frühere Version wurde 1868 gemalt. Kurz nach dem Tod von Manet wurde es 1884 von John Singer Sargent gekauft. Es wurde nur einmal in den letzten 100 Jahren in der National Gallery während einer Retrospektive der Werke des Künstlers am 100. Todestag öffentlich gezeigt.
