Gegenstand des Porträts ist der 17-jährige Armand Joseph Desire Roulin (1871 – 1945), ältester Sohn des Postmeisters Joseph Roulin. Im Sommer 1888 wurde van Gogh Freunde mit seinem Nachbar in Arles. Mit großer Zuneigung bemalte der Künstler eine Reihe von Porträts von Joseph Roulin und seiner Familie. Armand Roulin modeled für zwei Porträts ähnlich in Format und Ausführung; die in Essen ist die zweite Version. Es zeigt einen jungen Mann gekleidet in einer gelben Jacke, voll konfrontiert mit einem Hintergrund von Veronese grün. Van Gogh bemalte diese sorgfältig komponierte Studie kurz nach der ersten Version im Dezember 1888. Anscheinend bevorzugen das Thema und seine Familie dieses Porträt.
