Vincent van Gogh malte diese Arbeit in der winzigen Stadt Auvers-sur-Oise im Norden Frankreichs, wo er den Rat seines Bruders Theo für seine geistigen Probleme behandelt hatte. Vincent hat dort schließlich Selbstmord begangen, und das ist eine seiner letzten Gemälde. Es kam in den Besitz des Künstlers
