Das Denkmal dominiert den achteckigen Raum im Zentrum der Villa, rund um diese kolossale Arbeit steht das Pantheon del Risorgimento, eine Versammlung von illustren historischen Figuren, die während der Jahre der Vereinigung Italiens größtenteils gelebt. Der Herzog von Brunswick starb im Exil in Genf, so dass die Stadt eine energische Befragung unter der Bedingung, dass ein Mausoleum zu seiner Ehre errichtet wurde. Vela wurde eingeladen, das Projekt zu leiten. Zusammen mit dem Architekten Antonio Croci (1823-84) von Mendrisio realisierte er ein Architekturmodell, das nicht dem Komitee entsprach.
