Ein Einheimischer aus Lille, Vaillant ausgebildet in Antwerpen und Mitte der 1650er Jahre, wurde als Porträtist in Amsterdam gegründet. Der Künstler ist auch als Pionier der Mezzotint Gravur bekannt. In niederländischen und flämischen Portraits beziehen sich Falken in der Regel auf die Jagd als aristokratischer Sport.
