Halblanges Portrait von Präsident Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822-1893), 19. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten. Präsident Hayes sitzt mit seinen Händen vor ihm. In einem Tagebucheintrag vom 5. August 1877 nahm Präsident Hayes auf, dass der Künstler William Garle Browne kürzlich ein Büste-Portrait von ihm als ein Studium für ein Full-Länge-Portrait abgeschlossen hatte und es als “Perhaps, die besten noch bemalt.” Neben seinen Sitzungen mit Präsident Hayes vertraute Browne auf ein Foto von Mathew B. Brady, das den Präsidenten in einer formellen Pose mit seiner rechten Hand in seinen Mantel gefickt zeigt.
