Bis die Truppen der Union ankamen, bedeutete die Emancipation Proclamation wenig zu den meisten Sklaven in den Konföderierten Staaten von Amerika. Für afrikanische Amerikaner, die in Richmond, Virginia leben, kam der Tag der Emanzipation am 3. April 1865. Die Veranstaltung wurde an diesem Tag im 20. Jahrhundert jährlich gefeiert. Dieses Foto zeigt die Feier im Jahr 1905, 40 Jahre nach dem Ende des Krieges.
