William Hogarth ist am besten bekannt für seine beißen, satirischen Gravuren die Mode und mehrs der englischen Gesellschaft aus dem 18. Jahrhundert leuchten. Die meisten seiner Porträts sind zwischen 1738 und 1743 datiert, als er einen bereiten Markt für individuelle Ähnlichkeiten fand, und zeigen den gleichen scharfen Blickwinkel, der ihn zu einem ausgezeichneten Satiristen machte. Das Thema dieses Porträts, John Hamilton (geb. 1713/14), war ein Kapitän in der Royal Navy, der für bessere Bedingungen für seine Männer kämpfte. Hamilton.
