Müller reiste 1838 nach Ägypten und 1841 nach Kleinasien, aber er bemalte diese Skizze später in London. Dort war er Mitglied der Clipstone-Gruppe, einer Gruppe von Künstlern, die ein improvisiertes Studio betrieben, in dem Modelle zum Zwecke des Studiums engagiert waren. Diese Arbeit kann von einer dieser Sitzungen abgeleitet werden und könnte einen Schauspieler darstellen, möglicherweise in der Rolle von Othello.
