Bessie Potter (1872–1955) wurde in Saint Louis geboren und in Chicago studiert. Sie verdiente einen Ruf als Bildhauer von Statuetten in Bronze, die intime feminine Themen darstellen. 1899 heiratete sie den Maler Robert Vonnoh und lebte in New York, wo sie und ihr Mann zweifellos Chase kannten. In diesem Porträt erfasst Chase Potters sensible, aber reservierte Persönlichkeit. Ihre Pose und der weiche Turban, den sie trägt, erinnern sich an die in einem Selbstporträt (1790; Uffizi, Florenz) des französischen Malers Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755–1842), den Potter offenbar bewunderte.
