Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849–1932) wurde im Alter von achtzehn Jahren in die Vereinigten Staaten eingewandert. Nach einem Jahrzehnt im Kunstgeschäft in Boston schloss er sich der New Yorker Kunstgalerie Wunderlich und Company an, die später Kennedy Galleries wurde. 1916 trat er aus der Galerie zurück, um sich zu widmen, um Cloisonn zu sammeln E Emails und japanische Roben, die er später dem Metropolitan Museum gab. 1895, als Chase dieses Portrait an der National Academy of Design ausstellte, waren die beiden Männer Freunde und professionelle Mitarbeiter. Kennedy diente als Vermittler zwischen Chase und Whistler, der 1885 ein Herausfallen über das Porträt hatte, das Chase von Whistler in London malte.
