Wenn Morris entworfen hatSchlangenkopfin 1877, indische Seiden waren im Stil und weit importiert aus British India. Dieses Design zeichnet sich durch seine diminutiven Motive und die kräftigen roten und schwarzen Farben aus, die nur für kurze Zeit modisch waren, bevor hellere Farbtöne mit Kunden begünstigt wurden. Während sein Farbschema weit entfernte Länder mit wärmeren Klimatisierungen vorschlägt, zeigt das Muster eine der Lieblingsblumen von Morris: die Feigling, eine Wildblume, die er in den Wiesen in der Nähe von Oxford erinnert.
