Lydia Thompson, geboren in Großbritannien, gelang es als Tänzer, Komiker, Regisseur und Produzent. In London wurde sie eine führende burlesque Schauspielerin im Alter von 13 Jahren. In 1868 Thompson gründete ihre berüchtigte Gesellschaft, die Briten Blondes, und führte Burlesque in die USA. Obwohl Amerikaner für die Briten Blondes wild gingen, zog Thompson wilde Kritik an der Brauheit der Show. Als der Besitzer der Chicago Times Wilbur Story die Truppe für Unannehmlichkeit erschossen hat, setzten Thompson und ihr Mann auf Story und hüpften ihn. Obwohl Thompson festgenommen und feindlich wurde, bestand sie darauf, dass es jeden Penny wert war.
