Eine zentrale Figur unter der zweiten Generation von Hudson River Schulkünstlern, Haseltine wurde in eine Familie von Künstlern, einschließlich seiner Mutter und beiden Brüder geboren. Er zog 1869 nach Rom, Italien und reiste in ganz Europa. Von den frühen 1870er Jahren bis Ende 1890er Jahren fuhr er regelmäßig nach Venedig. Hier zeigt er einen Panoramablick auf die Stadt, mit der Basilika Santa Maria delle Salute hinter Fischerbooten sichtbar.
