Die Abreise der Israeliten aus der Sklaverei in Ägypten wird im Buch Exodus des Alten Testaments erzählt. Gott führte sie nachts mit dem Licht aus einer Feuersäule. West malte eine dramatische Nachtszene, mit dem Licht, das auf winzigen Figuren Moses und der Israeliten herabstrahlte.
