Eine Meditation über das Meeresleben, Winslow Homer’s Three Boys in einem Dory mit Lobster Pots schürt sich zurück zum Sommersjourn des Malers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, zwei Jahre früher. Der Künstler basierte auf zwei verwandten Werken, einer Illustration für Harpers Weekly und einem kleinen Ölgemälde, beide 1873 abgeschlossen. Diese Aquarell stellt eine Destillation dieser Ausführungen dar. Homer platzierte das Boot tiefer im Raum und akzentuierte die prekären Positionen von Hummerfallen am Bug und Jungs am Heck. Seine Veränderungen reduzierten die anekdotale Qualität der Szene, so dass sie nicht nur eine enge Scheibe des Alltags, sondern auch, noch breiter, die Vorbereitung der Jungen auf das Erwachsenenalter.
