In einer nachts aufgestellten Szene, um ihre Wirkung zu erhöhen, erscheint Christus in einem blendenden Licht an den römischen Soldaten Paul, der von seinem Pferd fällt, während seine Gefährten verstreut. Sobald ein Verfolger der Christen, Paulus wird sofort umgewandelt und wird ein Nachfolger Christi. Peter Paul Rubens nutzt die volle Wirkung dieser dramatischen Szene als Panik trifft die Pferde und Reiter. Die Verwendung einer starken Beleuchtung und einer komprimierten Zusammensetzung sind typisch für seine Arbeit kurz nach der Rückkehr nach Antwerpen aus Italien 1608.
