Zhao Yong wurde in Huzhou geboren, zweiter Sohn von Zhao Mengfu. Er war auch bekannt durch seinen Höflichkeitsnamen Zhongmu. Zhao Yong war Standby-Berater (daizhi) am Institut für Scholars (jixianyuan), einer Regierungsabteilung, die für die Sammlung und Organisation klassischer Werke verantwortlich ist. Später wurde er zum Erstklassigen Sub-Präfekt des Bezirks Huzhoulu. Zhao Yong war gut in Landschaftsmalerei und erbte Dong Yuans Stil. Er zeichnete sich besonders durch Malfiguren und Pferde aus, imitiert den Stil von Cao Ba und Han Gan; die Orchideen und Bambus unter seiner Pinsel sind rund, glatt und unruhig. In Bezug auf Kalligraphie, war er gut in regelmäßigen Skript, Laufskript, Cursive-Skript und clerical Skript, mit einem erfrischenden und kraftvollen Touch.
