Lukas Cranach der Ältere war ein politischer Anhänger und guter Freund von Martin Luther (1483-1545); der Künstler porträtierte ihn oft in Anhänger mit anderen Personen als seinem Mitarbeiter Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560) hier, oder seine Frau im Diptych an der Uffizien. Die beiden Paneele sind ein Werkstatt-Replikator, nachdem die Originalporträts Cranach zu 1543 gemalt hatte.
