Als Degas dieses Bild 1871 machte, Giacomo Meyerbeers Oper Robert le Diable war vierzig Jahre alt und fühlte sein Alter – wie vom Mann in der Mitte reflektiert, gleichgültig gegenüber der Aktion und leitete seine Ferngläser am Publikum. Aber Degas mochte die Oper und vor allem die hier abgebildete Szene aus dem dritten Akt, in dem Nonnen aus den Toten auferstehen und verführerisch inmitten der Ruinen eines Mondlichtklosters tanzen. Das Gemälde wurde Anfang 1872 ausgestellt, das Datum auf der Leinwand beschriftet; Degas führte später eine größere Version (Victoria und Albert Museum, London) für Jean-Baptiste Faure aus, die in der Oper spielte.
