Als erster Maler militärischer Subjekte führte Pils diese kompositorische Skizze in Verbindung mit einem Gemälde aus, fast fünfzig Fuß in der Länge und erinnerte an einen 1860 Besuch von Napoleon III nach Algerien, der 1830 von Frankreich erobert worden war. Die große Leinwand wurde für Versailles in Betrieb genommen, aber ihr Schicksal ist unbekannt; sie kann im Jahre 1871 zerstört worden, während der Auferstehung, die als Pariser Gemeinde bekannt ist.
