1736 reiste der englische Dichter und Dramatiker Edward Young mit seiner Familie durch Frankreich, als seine Stieftochter Elizabeth Temple in Lyon starb. Untersagt, ihre Überreste im katholischen Friedhof der Stadt wegen ihrer Religion zu intervenieren, war er verpflichtet, die protestantische Grabstätte in der Mitte der Nacht zu suchen. Sein romantisches und unauslöschlich makaberes Gedicht über die Geschichte, The Complaint oder Night-Thoughts on Life, Death und Immortality (1742–45) war während der Zeit der Französischen Revolution besonders beliebt. Dies ist eine Studie für ein Gemälde Vafflard ausgestellt auf dem Salon von 1804 (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Angoulême).
